My Story

Matthew Polidano has shown a keen interest in music from a very young age. He began studying piano and music theory at the age of seven under the instruction of Josette Polidano. At nine, he discovered his passion for wind instruments, starting flute lessons with Saviour Fenech and later continuing under Mro Joseph Psaila.

Over the years, Matthew learned to play several instruments, both brass and woodwind, but chose to specialise in the saxophone, studying under the mentorship of Joseph Vella. He is proficient in all four of the main types of saxophone. Matthew took part in the first set of masterclasses organised by Għaqda Nazzjonali Każini tal-Banda under the instruction of saxophone tutor Valerio Barbieri, and was selected to perform as tenor saxophonist with the Malta National Band in its debut concert under the direction of Prof. Gianpaolo Lazzeri. In 2023, he also performed in a musical organised by Teatru Malta titled Fido, alongside his teacher Joseph Vella, Godfrey Mifsud, and Philip Attard.

In 2023, Matthew travelled to Sweden for two years to pursue a Master’s degree in Acoustic Engineering at the Chalmers University of Technology. During his time there, he performed with the Chalmers Barockensemble under the direction of Pontus Bertling, playing multiple instruments including the soprano and alto saxophones, oboe, bass clarinet, and horn.

Beyond performance, Matthew is also an active composer for wind band, having written several festive marches. In 2024, he premiered a four-movement concert piece with the SoÄ‹jetà Filarmonika San Pietru Banda BirżebbuÄ¡a A.D. 1990, performing the opening tenor saxophone solo himself. He is currently teaching saxophone with the SoÄ‹jetà Filarmonika San Pietru Banda BirżebbuÄ¡a A.D. 1990.
